Ex-dividend date
Also called ex-date, record date
The first day on which a buyer no longer receives the coming dividend; to get it, buy by the day before.
How do the ex-dividend date and the record date differ?
A company pays the holders on its books on the record date. Because trades take time to settle, shares bought on or after the ex-dividend date do not make the record date.
Since US settlement moved to one business day (T+1) in May 2024, the ex-dividend date is usually the same day as the record date. The price tends to drop by about the dividend on the ex-date.
